About the product
ZAZAVAVINDRANO by E. D. Andriamalala — a classic of Malagasy literature inspired by the legendary water-spirit maiden of Malagasy folklore. In Malagasy.
Discover a classic of 20th-century Malagasy literature, inspired by one of the island's most enchanting legends.
Zazavavindrano takes its title from a cherished figure of Malagasy folklore — a beautiful water-spirit maiden said to dwell among the reeds and rivers of the countryside. First published in 1945 and reissued by Librairie Mixte, the novel reflects author E. D. Andriamalala's signature style: lyrical prose woven with Malagasy proverbs, an unconventional narrative structure, and his enduring exploration of idealized femininity and national identity.
A must-have for collectors of Malagasy literature and for readers wanting to explore the island's folklore and literary heritage in its original language.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Emilson Daniel (E. D.) Andriamalala (1916–1979) is widely regarded as the father of Malagasy literary realism. Author of 18 major works — including Fofombadiko, Hetraketraka, and Ilay Vohitry ny Nofy, all staples of the Malagasy school curriculum — he was praised by scholar Michèle Rakotoson as "the most modern Malagasy author" for his innovative deconstruction of narrative form.
